BT – These Hopeful Machines

on Black Hole Recordings

BT - These Hopeful Machines BT returns with long awaited sixth album ‘These Hopeful Machines’

Internationally renowned artist, visionary producer, film composer and technologist BT is back with These Hopeful Machines, a double-disc opus that carries listeners through 2 hours of sweeping orchestral arrangements, pulsating electronic beats, heartfelt vocal melodies and even simple acoustic guitar. Out February 19 (Black Hole Recordings), These Hopeful Machines embodies BT’s ability to weave both his technical prowess and compositional mastery that reminds listeners why he is the composer that all other composers and producers study.

These Hopeful Machines is the follow up to 2006’s This Binary Universe, an album that created an entirely new genre of evocative electro-acoustic music. Keyboard Magazine wrote in a review, “In a hundred years, it could well be studied as the first major work of the new millennium. It’s that good.” These Hopeful Machines continues to evolve BT’s distinct technical, lyrical and compositional vision and execution, but his usual melodic complexity and bleeding-edge electronic techniques permeate the album from start to finish.

Album opener and third official single “Suddenly” opens to a minute’s worth of glitchy breakbeats made using BT’s own software, Breaktweaker, before morphing into a powerful, guitar-driven anthem that is among the album’s most memorable songs. The track “The Emergency”, is instantly a classic BT dance hit designed to linger long after the song ends. The album even features BT’s first cover, a reinterpretation of “The Ghost in You” by The Psychedelic Furs. The song was recorded on tape, giving it a familiar and sentimental feeling while maintaining BT’s distinctive style. There are also multiple collaborators on This Binary Universe, like Rob Dickinson vocals on “Always” and “The Unbreakable”, Jes, (formerly of Motorcyle) on “Every Other Way” and “The Light In Things”, and The Police’s Stewart Copeland who lends a drum breakdown to “Every Other Way”.

From an early age, BT, born Brian Transeau, demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for playing and understanding classical music. He was heavily influenced by avant-garde and romantic composers such as Stravinsky, Bartok, Debussy and Rachmaninov. His biggest influences, however, were from everyday sounds that most would take for granted, from noticing the meter of the grandfather clock in the foyer to the micro-rhythms of crickets and cicadas to the ambience of passing trains at night.

“When examining my creation process, it makes perfect sense why I am a forced technologist”, he explains. ”I frequently face the fact that the tools I need to compose music simply don’t exist. It is like being an architect without bricks or mortar. I routinely create my own bricks and connective tissue as the diving off point to the compositional process”.

The drive to actualize the tools BT envisions has led to his evolution as one of the most cutting-edge programmers and technologists in music today. He has expanded this reach into a visionary software venture, Sonik Architects which launched its critically- and commercially-acclaimed iPhone application, Sonifi™, last fall.
Says BT, “My ultimate goal is to keep the emotional counterpoint and the integrity of the song intact, even when pushing the envelope with style and technique. The faster things get, the less people are willing to take in a body of creative work. There are so few things now that will engage us. The intent of consuming music is usually to have an awareness or a feeling, to have a truly, empathic connection to others. My hope is to create something that makes people feel that they have consumed something that completes a void. I want to create something lasting”.

Marcie’s Lyric Picks Vol. 2: Being Real

March 12, 2010

Marcie’s Lyric Picks Vol. 2: Being Real

Marcies Lyric Picks

We all feel like outsiders at times.  Even amongst friends and families, we all have times when we are not comfortable in our own skin.  We worry about how we are viewed by others, and how to fit in.  We think about what we have in common with each other, & what our differences are.  We struggle with feelings of inadequacy when we compare ourselves with others.  We look down on people whom we make the mistake of viewing only superficially.  We are afraid be our real selves and we take on personas that might not reflect who we really are or want to be.

Here are some of my favorite tracks that deal with the struggle to be comfortable and happy with who we are.

 Marcies Lyric Picks Vol. 2

By Marcie of "Behind The Lyric"

1) DJ Tiesto- Just Be
"They say learning to love yourself
Is the first step
That you take when you want to be real
Flying on planes to exotic locations
won’t teach you
How you really feel"

I feel this track laid some lyrical groundwork for Trance Music. Trance music is meant to take a listener to a state of euphoria where love for others and self acceptance prevail.

2) First State feat. Sarah Howells- Brave
"If I was brave
I’d never get this wrong"

I love how this lyric admits a vulnerability.  We all want to be strong and perfect, but we all have times of self doubt, mistakes, and disappointment.  We make demands of ourselves that are hard to live up to.

3) Sunlounger feat. Zara- Lost
"Now that you have lost yourself,
oh can anything help you now"

In "Behind The Lyric Episode 7", Zara says this song is about losing control to her desires, betraying herself, and losing her self respect.  She realized that without self respect, she felt lost in the world.  Writing a song was a way to find herself again.

"Lost" is another track that speaks about following a true path.  It’s easy to lose ourselves when we give in to temptations and instant gratification.  Listening to this track makes me feel that I am not alone, that everyone makes mistakes, and that I can rely on the strength inside myself during challenging times.

4) John O’Callaghan feat. Sarah Howells – Find Yourself
"Looking at life through a loaded gun
Take your best shot, aim it at the sun
Looking at life through a loaded gun
You know you’ll find
You’ll find yourself, you’ll find yourself alone"

This track seems to say that if you focus on superficial, selfish pursuits, then when you finally reach your goals, you will find you’re all alone.  Are our goals worth achieving if we alienate ourselves and hurt others along our path?

5) Andain- Beautiful Things:
"Stopped pushing on for just a second
Then nothing’s changed
Who am I this time?
Where’s my name?
I guess it crept away"

For me this track is about losing ourselves in a created identity, and then reminding ourselves that natural beauty exists around us all the time.

6) Doppler Effect- Beauty Hides In The Deep:
"Beauty hides in the deep
But its so hard to find
Being wrapped up inside"

7) Kirsty Hawkshaw & Tenisha – Outsiders
"Take a look at yourself as an outsider
Do you like what you see?
You can’t see what you’re thinking
You can’t feel what you’re feeling
You could be anyone"

The way Kirsty delivers these lines always makes me stop and think.  The melody is part sung, part spoken, and I think that style works very well to get the point across, and set the mood for the rest of the vocal.

8)  DJ Hashish feat. Marcie- Look Around
"What is the answer to this fear?
I can’t just watch and see
Should I take the easy way out, or should I
Should I just be me?"

When we’re afraid, we might let our fear dictate our actions.  We need to work hard to find the best solutions to our problems.  We can’t sit back and let other people do things for us, or try to take the easy way out.

9) OceanLab – On A Good Day
"Been talking to myself forever, yeah
And how I wish I knew me better, yeah
Still sitting on a shelf but never
Never seen the sun shine brighter"

How many of us truly feel we know ourselves? What does it take to know oneself?

10) Julian Vincent Feat. Cathy Burton – Here For Me
"You say I can love me for who I am
Don’t need to change or pretend
To see my own beauty is like breathing happiness
Just trust in my heart
Be real"

I like how this track describes someone telling her that she doesn’t have to pretend to be anything other than herself.  Love works best when it comes with acceptance.

Cosmic Gate – Back 2 Back 4

March 12, 2010

Cosmic Gate – Back 2 Back 4

Cosmic Gate - Back 2 Back 4Funny as it might seem, it takes a lot for a group to ‘recover’ from the runaway success of a global top 10 single… especially when it’s one of their first. Possessing both innovation and determination in equally large measures, Bossi and Nic Chagall were never going to sit back and let that happen… By any measure you care to choose, Cosmic Gate’s regeneration is complete… 2.0 achieved. The ghost of ‘Fire Wire’ laid to rest… once and for all.

Last year saw them produce and deliver their forth consummately fine artist album. A ‘slam-dunk’ as they say on the other side of the pond, what ‘Sign of the Times’ did in terms of contributing to the success of Cosmic Gate’s ‘09 is hard to overstate. A highest-climber move into the top 20 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart, a clutch of hot-house singles & remixes and a small matter of a couple of 2010 International Dance Music Award nominations – all after effects of a hugely embraced album.

Now for their first major manoeuvre of 2010, the lads are bringing back their much-loved Back 2 Back compilation album for a (possibly slightly overdue) 4th outing. Compiled and mixed throughout the course of their recent South America tour and even more specifically whilst on the Rio de Janeiro leg, the 2 discs serve as new maps to their musical minds. From the deeper, more progressive half of their brains, disc 1 summons sound-scaping atmospherics including Greg Morrison’s ‘Another Suggestion’, Blake Jarrell’s ‘Galapagos’ and the Moonbeam produced, Daniel Mimra vocalled slow-burner ‘Look Around. As it reaches, and then crosses the halfway point, Nic and Bossi start to open the gate and allow more melodic entities to enter. Estiva & Temple One’s ‘November Lovely and Cosmic Gate’s own remix of Kyau & Albert’s ‘I Love You’, numbered among them.

Back 2 Back 4’s second disc brings in more heavyweight studio operators. Rank 1 & Jochem Miller’s current collaboration ‘The Great Escape’, Ronski Speed’s ‘Denva’ and – in its Nic Chagall remix form – Marco V & Jonathan Mendelsohn’s Coming Back’ all lie in wait. C.G. themselves are also well represented here… Inspired by their time in Rio, their next single ‘Barra’ (the video for which has just gone online on their YouTube Channel) opens the disc while and fan-favourite ‘London Rain’ has also been given a special Back 2 Back 4 re-shape for inclusion.

If this audio-fusillade sounds all too appealing, well we might be able to help in putting a copy of Back 2 Back 4 into you hands. Black Hole has given us 10 copies, signed by Nic and Bossi to put up for grabs. All you have to do to be in with a shout of grabbing one is to tell us your top 3 Cosmic Gate tracks or remixes. Easy!

Back 2 Back 4 Mixed by Cosmic Gate is out on the first of March thru Black Hole Recordings.
